An emergency light is a battery-backed lighting device that turns on automatically when a building experiences a power outage. Ontario Fire Code states that Emergency lights are required in commercial buildings, ex. businesses, stores, and rental housing. Code requires that they be installed in older buildings as well. There are many types of Emergency Light units.

In accordance with Ont FIRE CODE, Emergency Lights must be Serviced / Tested annually by a qaulified. Testing involves testing the batteries and activating the units for a full 30 minutes each, to ensure that they are working properly. Items that may need attention are new batteries, bulbs, and some cases a completely new unit.
